Gridded 5 arcmin datasets for simultaneously farm-size-specific and crop-specific harvested areas in 56 countries

Abstract. Farms are not homogeneous. Smaller farms generally have different planted crops, yields, agricultural inputs, and irrigation applications compared to larger farms. However, gridded farm-size-specific data that moreover crop specific, currently lacking. This obscures our understanding of differences between small-scale large-scale farms, e.g., with respect climate change adaptation mitigation strategies, contribution (local) food security, water consumption patterns. study fills a significant part the current gap, by developing high-resolution gridded, simultaneously crop-specific datasets harvested areas for 56 countries (i.e., covering about half global cropland). Hereto, we downscaled most complete direct measurements farm size type compiling state art datasets, including maps, cropland extent dominant field distribution, representative year 2010. Using two map sources, were able produce new 5 arcmin on derived areas: one 11 sizes, 27 2 farming systems, 42 4 systems. In line previous findings, resulting show major in crops irrigated area (%) sizes. Consistency (i) observations from satellite images oil palm, (ii) household surveys (%), (iii) studies mapped noncrop-specific sizes support validity datasets. Although at grid level some uncertainties remain be overcome, particularly those stemming results country seem robust.
